National Preparedness Month Highlights Tornado, Flood, and Fire Safety
September marks National Preparedness Month, an annual campaign initiated by FEMA to encourage families, businesses, and communities to prepare for emergencies. This year’s theme, 'Americans Stand Ready,' emphasizes self-reliance and community support. In Alabama, the Emergency Management Agency has launched a statewide notification system, ALalert, to provide real-time updates on floods and other disasters. Residents can register for alerts by texting ALalert to 77295. The campaign also promotes creating household emergency plans, building disaster supply kits, and understanding local risks, such as tornadoes, floods, and extreme weather events. The National Weather Service in Birmingham underscores the importance of preparedness, especially during Alabama's primary severe weather seasons in spring and late fall. National Preparedness Month concludes on September 30 with National Preparedness Day, a call to action for ongoing readiness.
