Texas Woman Criticizes ICE for Detaining Longtime Nanny Amid Immigration Penalties
A Texas woman, Maureen Mendrek-Laske, who voted for President Trump, expressed her dismay after federal agents detained her longtime childcare provider, Joyce Basele, during a routine immigration check-in. Basele, a 64-year-old Kenyan national and certified nursing assistant, was detained by ICE in Houston and faces over $1.8 million in civil immigration penalties. Despite having no criminal record, Basele's immigration status lapsed following a divorce, leading to a final order of removal in 2011. She has been under ICE supervision since 2012, regularly checking in with authorities. Her detention has sparked criticism from her employer and attorney, who argue that the penalties are excessive and that Basele has been compliant with immigration requirements.
