Coastal Carolina University Student Dies from Hit-and-Run Injuries, Community Holds Honor Walk

Kalina Trent, a 21-year-old Coastal Carolina University (CCU) student from Montgomery, New Jersey, died from injuries sustained in an August 16 hit-and-run crash. The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. as Trent was attempting to cross Highway 544 near Elvington Loop. She was one of two students struck in the crash. Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard confirmed Trent's death on Saturday night. In her honor, over 300 people, including community members and hospital staff, participated in an honor walk at a Grand Strand hospital. Photos from the event showed many attendees dressed in teal, CCU's school color, lining hospital hallways with bowed heads. Trent's mother, Kimberly Trent, announced on social media that her daughter would be donating her organs following the walk. Mauricio Palafox-Correa, 17, has been arrested in connection with the crash and charged with felony DUI and two counts of hit-and-run with great bodily injury.
