Imperial County Approves Lot Merger for AI Data Center Amid Public Opposition
The Imperial County Board of Supervisors has approved a lot merger to facilitate the construction of a proposed hyperscale AI data center by Imperial Valley Computer Manufacturing. The decision, made in a 4-1 vote, allows the combination of several parcels of land necessary for the project. Despite the approval, the developer must still secure water and electrical agreements with the Imperial Irrigation District. The meeting was marked by high tensions, with significant public opposition due to environmental concerns. Many attendees, including members of the Laborers’ International Union of America, supported the project, citing economic benefits. However, opponents, including local residents and community groups, expressed concerns about the project's impact on air quality and resources. The meeting saw the removal of several individuals opposing the project, highlighting the contentious nature of the decision.
