Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Leads to Evacuations
A luxury cruise ship, the MV Hondius, has been affected by a hantavirus outbreak, resulting in the evacuation of three passengers, two of whom are seriously ill. The ship, which was marooned off the coast of Cape Verde, is now expected to head to Spain's Canary Islands. The World Health Organization has confirmed that the Andean strain of the virus, capable of human-to-human transmission, is involved. Despite the outbreak, the WHO maintains that the risk to the wider public remains low. The situation is being closely monitored, with contact tracing efforts underway to prevent further spread.
