U.S. Rep. Kat Cammack Highlights Significance of Retiring Gainesville Airport K-9 Beamer
U.S. Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla., recently spoke at the retirement ceremony for Gainesville Regional Airport K-9 Beamer, an explosive detection dog. Beamer, the first K-9 assigned to the airport, was named after Todd Beamer, a hero from 9/11. Cammack, whose husband is a first responder, emphasized the personal significance of the day and the K-9's role in representing service and the evolution of airport security since 2001. She highlighted that before 9/11, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) did not exist, and flying was a different experience. Now, working K-9s like Beamer are a common and crucial part of airport safety protocols, ensuring the security of passengers and flights. Beamer's handler, Jason Berger, expressed the bittersweet nature of the retirement, noting the K-9's dedication over eight and a half years.
