Paleontologists Uncover Diverse Dinosaur Fauna in Pyrenees, Including Small Carnivorous Species Related to Chinese Dinosaurs
Paleontologists in the Pyrenees region have discovered a diverse array of dinosaur-era fauna, including a small carnivorous dinosaur related to species found in China. This discovery is part of ongoing research in an area that preserves layers of terrain from 70 to 66 million years ago, offering an exceptional record of ancient life. The region, encompassing Alt Urgell, Berguedà, Pallars Jussà, and La Noguera, has yielded fossil remains of dinosaur species distinct from those found in the United States and China, though the newly identified carnivorous dinosaur shows a connection to Chinese counterparts. The Dinosaures del Pirineu project, coordinated by paleontologist Àngel Galobart, has also reconstructed the ancient landscape using preserved plant remains and identified other accompanying fauna such as turtles, crocodiles, and flying reptiles.
