Massachusetts Business Leaders Advocate for Advanced Nuclear Reactors Amid Energy Concerns
Business leaders in Massachusetts are spearheading a campaign to reintroduce nuclear power to the state, specifically exploring the development of advanced nuclear reactors. This initiative comes as electric bills are rising and fears of blackouts are growing. The effort faces opposition from anti-nuclear activists, skepticism from the state Senate, and a generally hostile mainstream media. South Shore Chamber President and CEO Tim Cahill, a former state treasurer, believes that technological advancements, particularly in small modular reactors (SMRs), could be a 'game changer' for the state's energy sector. Discussions have been ongoing for nearly a year, with a focus on potentially utilizing the site of the former Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth. UMass Lowell professor Sukesh Aghara, who heads the university’s nuclear engineering program, is scheduled to speak to local chambers of commerce about the latest advancements in nuclear technology and its potential future in Massachusetts.
