White House Revises Critical Technology List, Removing Data Centers and AR While Adding Post-Quantum Cryptography
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has updated its National Security Science & Technology Strategy, leading to a revised Critical and Emerging Technologies (CET) list. This marks the first revision since February 2024, shrinking the list from 18 to 14 categories. Notable removals include advanced cloud services, high-performance data storage, data centers, batteries, grid integration, gas turbine engines, and augmented and virtual reality. Conversely, new additions to the list are post-quantum cryptography, integrated photonics, high entropy alloys, and 'hardened operating systems for consumer use.' The advanced computing category has been renamed 'future computing technologies' and now includes edge computing for tactical environments, photonic and neuromorphic modalities, and advanced spatial computing, while shedding advanced cloud services and data centers.
