Indiana Governor Proposes $200 Million for Child Care Vouchers to Aid 14,000 Children
Governor Mike Braun of Indiana has announced a proposal to allocate $200 million to the state's child care voucher program, aiming to assist approximately 14,000 low-income children currently on a waitlist. This initiative seeks to redirect funds from the General Fund to the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF), a federal program managed by the state, which has been closed to new applicants for over a year due to funding constraints. The proposal, pending approval from the State Budget Committee, is expected to increase enrollment to 57,000 children by May. The plan also includes reserved slots for foster and kinship families, special needs and homeless children, and children of child care workers. The move is part of a broader effort to provide economic support to families and strengthen the workforce by ensuring access to affordable child care.
