Study Highlights Exercise's Role in Protecting Aging Brain from Decline
A recent study led by Dr. James Broatch from Victoria University has reinforced the importance of exercise in safeguarding the brain against age-related decline, including conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The research, published in Trends in Neurosciences, explores how exercise might enhance the brain's glymphatic system, which is responsible for clearing waste from the brain. This system becomes increasingly vital as people age. The study reviewed existing animal and human research, finding that exercise can improve several biological processes that aid in brain waste clearance, such as lowering blood pressure, reducing vascular stiffness, and improving neuron activation. Despite these findings, the study notes that more research is needed to determine the most effective types and amounts of exercise for brain health.
