G20 Expands Membership and Strengthens Global Economic Cooperation
The Group of Twenty (G20) has expanded its membership to include the African Union, increasing its permanent members to 21. This decision was made during the 2023 New Delhi Summit. The G20, established in 1999, serves as a primary international forum for financial and macroeconomic cooperation. It accounts for nearly 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade. The forum operates through two main tracks: the Finance Track, led by Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, and the Sherpa Track, led by personal emissaries of national leaders. These tracks focus on fiscal policy, international financial architecture, and non-financial developmental issues. The G20 does not have a permanent secretariat; instead, its leadership rotates annually, supported by a Troika mechanism.
