Italy Commemorates Marcinelle Tragedy with European Day Proposal
On August 8, Italy observes the 'Giornata del sacrificio del lavoro italiano nel mondo' to honor Italians who died working abroad, particularly remembering the Marcinelle mining disaster in Belgium in 1956. The tragedy, which claimed 262 lives, including 136 Italians, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by migrant workers. The event is marked by initiatives to honor these workers' contributions to the social and economic development of their host countries. Recently, the European Commission's Vice President, Minzatu, proposed establishing a European Day for victims of workplace accidents on the same date, highlighting the importance of worker dignity and safety.
