Wisconsin Governor and GOP Leaders Announce $1.8 Billion Deal for Tax Relief and School Funding
Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Republican leaders in the Wisconsin Legislature have reached a $1.8 billion agreement aimed at providing tax relief and increasing funding for public education. The deal, which has been in negotiation for months, includes $850 million in direct payments to taxpayers, with $600 allocated for married joint filers and $300 for individuals. Additionally, the agreement proposes $600 million for K-12 education, with a focus on general school aid and special education reimbursement. This initiative is set to utilize a significant portion of the state's budget surplus, estimated at $2.5 billion, while leaving the rainy day fund intact. Despite the announcement, the deal faces uncertainty as some lawmakers, including the state Senate's top Democrat, have expressed concerns.
