Wisconsin's Brain Drain: Economic Impact and Potential Solutions
Wisconsin is experiencing a significant 'brain drain,' with more college-educated individuals leaving the state than entering. According to a report by the Wisconsin Policy Forum, the state has the second-largest net loss of young educated workers in the U.S., following North Dakota. Many of these individuals are moving to states like Minnesota, California, and Texas. The report highlights that 60% of Wisconsin-born adults in their 30s who live out of state hold a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 45% of those who move into Wisconsin. This trend poses challenges for the state's economy, particularly in filling high-paying jobs that require advanced degrees.
