Semaglutide Shows Promise in Reducing Cardiovascular Events in Obese Patients
Semaglutide, marketed under names such as Ozempic and Wegovy, has demonstrated significant cardiovascular benefits in recent clinical trials. The SELECT trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlighted a 20% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events, including heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular death, among overweight or obese patients with pre-existing heart disease but no diabetes. This development marks a transition for semaglutide from a diabetes treatment to a broader cardiometabolic platform, offering protection to the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys across diverse patient groups. The drug's efficacy in weight loss was also noted, with patients achieving a mean body weight reduction of about 9.4%.
