Chicago's Smart Streets Program Fines Delivery Companies for Blocking Bike Lanes
Chicago's 'Smart Streets' pilot program has issued nearly $2.6 million in fines to companies obstructing bike lanes, bus lanes, and bus stops. The initiative, which began in late 2024, uses cameras on city vehicles and CTA buses to capture violations. Major delivery companies like Amazon, FedEx, and UPS have been fined for such infractions, with Amazon's third-party contractors being responsible for a significant portion of the violations. The program aims to enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians by reducing obstructions that force them into traffic. The initiative has seen a reduction in repeat offenses, with recidivism dropping from 15.6% to 7.6%. The program is set to expand, with more camera-equipped buses being added to the fleet.
