Detroit Expands Green Infrastructure to Combat Flooding
Detroit, MI, is ramping up efforts to address chronic flooding and sewer overflows through green infrastructure (GSI) projects. Over 1,500 GSI initiatives across Southeast Michigan now capture 19 million gallons of stormwater annually. The city recently completed its largest GSI project to date, the Far West Stormwater Improvement Project, which redirects stormwater from a 210-acre area into two basins in Rouge Park. These basins can collect up to 119 million gallons of stormwater per year, significantly reducing basement backups and combined sewer overflows (CSOs). The Rain Catchers Collective, a coalition of watershed councils, is also seeking $12.5 million in state funding to expand residential GSI programs and train a workforce for installation and maintenance.
