Report Finds Burning Wood for Power Worse for Climate Than Gas, Challenges UK Subsidy Plans
A new report has revealed that burning wood for power generation can be more detrimental to the climate than burning gas, even when carbon emissions are captured and stored. This finding challenges the UK government's plans to subsidize carbon capture technologies attached to wood-burning power. The research, conducted by scientists from the US, UK, and China, indicates that bio-energy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) systems could take up to 150 years to become 'carbon negative'. The study highlights the inefficiency of wood in energy production compared to gas and the environmental impact of converting land for biomass cultivation.
