England Faces Urgent Flood Risk with 1.2 Million Buildings Unprotected
A recent study highlights that 1.2 million buildings in England are at risk of flooding without any protective defenses. The research, conducted by Ordnance Survey and Snowflake, reveals that two-thirds of these vulnerable buildings are located in economically disadvantaged areas. The primary threat is surface-water flooding, exacerbated by heavy rainfall and urbanization. The UK has experienced record rainfall in early 2026, intensifying the urgency to address flood risks. The Environment Agency estimates that 6.3 million properties are at risk from various flooding sources, including surface water, coastal swells, and rivers. Despite efforts to improve flood defenses, the construction of new homes on flood-prone land continues, with 11% of homes built between 2022 and 2024 facing medium to high flood risks.
