Kansas City Committee Advances E-Bike Safety Ordinance with New Regulations
The Kansas City City Council's Transportation, Infrastructure and Operations Committee has approved the E-Bike Safety Rules Ordinance, sponsored by Mayor Quinton Lucas. This ordinance introduces new regulations for electric bicycles and scooters, including an age minimum of 16 for operators, mandatory helmet use for riders under 18, and specific speed limits. The ordinance sets a 15 mph speed limit for sidewalks and a 20 mph limit for bike lanes and trails. Following its committee approval, the ordinance will be presented to the full City Council for a vote. If passed, there will be a 120-day delay to allow for public education on the new rules.
