Xavier Becerra Avoids Reporters at California Capitol Amid Voter ID Law Debate
Xavier Becerra, a Democratic candidate for California Governor, made his first public appearance at the state Capitol since the primary election. During a press conference supporting two proposed state laws related to the Voting Rights Act, Becerra spoke briefly before leaving the event. The proposed laws aim to expand language access for voters with limited English proficiency and prevent actions that could lead to voter suppression. Reporters attempted to question Becerra about his opposition to a ballot measure requiring voter ID in future California elections and his plans to debate his Republican opponent, Steve Hilton. Becerra did not respond to these questions, and his spokesman, Jonathan Underland, indicated that Becerra plans to engage with journalists more in the coming weeks.
