Oregon University Classified Employees Authorize Strike Amid Contract Disputes

Classified employees across Oregon’s seven public universities have voted to authorize a strike, which could commence as early as September 28. These employees, represented by SEIU 503, include custodians, dining hall workers, office staff, and other support personnel. The union is currently engaged in contract negotiations with Oregon’s Public Universities. An impasse in bargaining was declared last month, and a recent vote saw 97% of participating union members authorize their leaders to call for a strike. Jennifer Smith, the classified union president for the University of Oregon, stated that the universities' current offer could weaken the union by removing protections related to layoffs and outsourcing. While the economic offer has improved, Smith noted it still does not adequately address the rising cost of living for employees.
