Tennessee Judge Reopens Lawsuit Challenging Christa Pike's Lethal Injection Protocol
A Davidson County judge has reopened a lawsuit filed by Christa Pike, Tennessee's only woman on death row, challenging the state's lethal-injection protocol. This development comes more than a week after Tennessee was unable to carry out Pike's execution. The lawsuit, which predates the failed execution attempt on September 30, had been stalled due to a procedural dispute over which court should hear the case. Chancellor I’Ashea Myles set aside an earlier order that transferred the lawsuit to the Tennessee Supreme Court, effectively placing the case back on the Davidson County Chancery Court docket. The ruling does not validate Pike's claims about the protocol but allows her legal challenge to proceed. The court has also requested private information regarding Pike's current living conditions at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, attorney access, and restraints.
