Missouri Secretary of State Threatens Library Funding Over LGBTQ+ Story Time Event
Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins has threatened to cut funding for the Daniel Boone Regional Library (DBRL) if it proceeds with an LGBTQ+-themed story time event. The event, titled 'Rainbow Story Time,' is scheduled to take place at the Columbia Public Library and includes readings of books such as 'Rainbowsaurus' and 'Big Wig,' which focus on themes of diversity and inclusion. Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway has also been involved, ensuring the event complies with state laws. Despite the controversy, library officials, including spokeswoman Mitzi St. John, have stated that the event will proceed as planned, emphasizing that the books do not contain sexual content. The library union has expressed its commitment to serving a diverse community, while legal experts argue that the event does not violate Missouri's pornography laws.
