Civics Center Report Challenges Apathy Myth Among Pennsylvania Youth Voters, Citing Registration as Key Barrier
A new report from the Civics Center, a national nonpartisan nonprofit, suggests that low voter turnout among young people in Pennsylvania is primarily due to registration hurdles rather than apathy. The study indicates that registered 18-year-olds in the state vote at rates comparable to registered voters aged 45 to 79 in major elections. Laura Brill, founder of the Civics Center, stated that this data helps to debunk the myth of youth apathy, emphasizing that the main challenge lies in getting young people registered and helping them understand the importance of participating in the democratic process. The organization aims to embed voter registration into high school culture, empowering students to see themselves as active participants in democracy.
