Senate Considers Bipartisan Bill to Reform IRS Whistleblower Program
A bipartisan bill aimed at reforming the IRS whistleblower program is gaining traction in the Senate following its approval in the House. The IRS Whistleblower Program Improvement Act, introduced by Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Wyden, seeks to enhance protections and support for whistleblowers who report tax noncompliance. The bill proposes several changes, including allowing new evidence during appeals in the U.S. Tax Court, permitting whistleblowers to remain anonymous unless a societal interest dictates otherwise, and requiring interest on certain whistleblower payments if the IRS delays award notifications. Since 2007, the IRS has collected approximately $7.5 billion due to whistleblower disclosures, with over $1.3 billion awarded to whistleblowers. The bill is supported by organizations such as the National Whistleblower Center and Taxpayers Against Fraud.
