Democrats' Climate Hushing Faces Pushback from Activists Amid Extreme Weather
Amidst a summer marked by extreme weather events such as torrential rains in Texas and smoke from Canadian wildfires reaching Florida, the issue of climate change has largely vanished from the political discourse. This trend, referred to as 'climate hushing,' sees many Democrats avoiding the topic despite its significance. Activists, organized by the Climate Action Campaign, are mobilizing during the federal recess to urge lawmakers to prioritize climate issues. Demonstrations are planned in at least 20 states, involving groups like the Sierra Club and the NAACP. The movement is driven by polling data indicating that a majority of Americans, including nearly half of Republicans, acknowledge the increasing frequency of extreme weather, and two-thirds express concern about global warming.
