EU Lawmakers Urge Integration of Crypto and Digital Tools into Anti-Corruption Strategy
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are advocating for the European Commission to incorporate the risks associated with crypto assets, opaque ownership structures, and digital tools into its forthcoming anti-corruption strategy. This call comes as the Parliament adopted a nonbinding resolution outlining its priorities for the Commission's strategy. The resolution also emphasizes the need for enhanced efforts to trace, freeze, confiscate, and recover criminal proceeds. This initiative builds upon the EU's anti-corruption directive, which became effective in May and aims to standardize definitions of corruption offenses and minimum penalties across the bloc. Beyond asset recovery, MEPs are pushing for stricter regulations concerning public procurement and grants, more consistent standards for conflicts of interest, clearer lobbying guidelines, and common rules for political financing.
