Illinois Department of Corrections to Close Logan Women's Prison, Rebuild at Stateville Site
The Illinois Department of Corrections has announced plans to close the Logan Correctional Center, a women's prison in central Illinois, and rebuild it near the Stateville Correctional Center site south of Chicago. This decision is part of a broader initiative to modernize the state's correctional infrastructure, as both Logan and Stateville are considered outdated. The plan, initially proposed by Governor JB Pritzker in 2024, aims to replace these aging facilities with new structures that incorporate rehabilitative and gender-responsive design features. The project is expected to cost approximately $1 billion, which is seen as a more cost-effective solution compared to the hundreds of millions required for deferred maintenance of the existing facilities. The new prisons will focus on providing housing, education, medical, and mental health services to support the reintegration of inmates into society.
