New Jersey Grandfather Charged with Homicide After DUI Boat Crash Kills Two Grandchildren
Stephen Schneider, 64, has been charged with two counts of reckless vessel homicide/death by vessel, operating a vessel under the influence, and reckless operation of a vessel following a fatal boat crash on Barnegat Bay, New Jersey. The incident, which occurred on July 19, resulted in the deaths of his two grandchildren, Mya Golabek, 9, and Sigmund Paul Golabek, 7. According to court documents, the children were on Schneider's 30-foot Tidewater 280 boat after a family dinner when he crashed into a wood channel marker around 9 p.m., sending both children into the water. Despite wearing life jackets, they were found face-down and later died at the hospital after Schneider and his wife attempted CPR. Schneider claimed to have consumed only three beers during the two-hour outing, but State Police confirmed his alertness, sense of care, caution, perception, judgment, response time, and coordination were markedly impaired by alcohol.
