Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer Faces Scrutiny Despite Patient Satisfaction
Focal therapy, an alternative treatment for localized prostate cancer, is gaining attention among patients and some physicians, despite being considered experimental by treatment guidelines. This approach targets only cancerous lesions visible on MRI scans, using various technologies like cryotherapy, laser ablation, and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to destroy cancer cells. Unlike traditional treatments such as prostatectomy or radiation, focal therapy aims to preserve more of the diseased organ, potentially reducing severe side effects like incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
