Lee County to Install Advanced Weather Radar for Faster Tornado and Storm Detection
Lee County, Florida, is preparing to install its first weather radar system to enhance storm detection and emergency response capabilities across Southwest Florida. The multimillion-dollar radar, developed in partnership with Climavision, aims to address blind spots in storm tracking caused by reliance on the distant National Weather Service radar in Tampa. The new system will provide critical data on tornadoes, heavy rainfall, and hail, enabling faster and more accurate emergency declarations, particularly during hurricane season. The radar will be installed on the roof of Lee County’s Public Safety Center and is expected to be operational within weeks. Funding and maintenance will be covered by Climavision with assistance from NOAA. Meteorologists anticipate improved severe weather warnings and earlier determinations for thunderstorms and tornadoes.
