Great Lakes Beach Closures Linked to Pollution and Heavy Rain
Beach closures across the Great Lakes are a recurring issue, primarily driven by pollution following heavy rainfall. Storms overwhelm older sewer systems, causing combined sewer overflows that release stormwater and raw sewage into the lakes. Additionally, rain washes fertilizers, manure, and pet waste into the water, increasing bacterial contamination. Lake Erie, the shallowest and warmest Great Lake, experiences the highest number of advisories due to its favorable conditions for bacteria growth. In 2024, at least 256 beaches across Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, and Wisconsin were affected, resulting in 2,988 beach-days of warnings between May and September. Urban beaches near cities and storm drains are particularly vulnerable, while remote beaches with colder, deeper waters often remain unaffected.
