Los Angeles Faces Rising Cases of Flea-Borne Typhus, Health Officials Issue Urgent Warning
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is investigating a significant outbreak of flea-borne typhus in the Pico-Union neighborhood. This bacterial infection, caused by Rickettsia typhi, is transmitted through infected fleas. The outbreak has resulted in five hospitalizations this year, with all patients recovering. The county has seen a steady increase in cases since 2010, with a record 220 cases reported in 2025. Symptoms of typhus include fever, headache, rash, and body aches, typically appearing one to two weeks after infection. Health officials emphasize the importance of flea control for pets and avoiding contact with stray animals to prevent further spread.
