HUD Must Face California Lawsuit Over DEI Grant Conditions Mandated by President Trump's Executive Orders
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has been ordered to face a lawsuit challenging grant conditions that require recipients to comply with President Trump’s executive orders on immigration and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Judge Jon S. Tigar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California issued the order on Monday, rejecting the federal government's argument that the claims brought by city and county public housing authorities were duplicative of a separate lawsuit in Washington state. The judge determined that the parties and issues in the California case are distinct from those in the Washington litigation, necessitating that HUD address the legal challenge directly. This ruling means that the lawsuit, which contests the legality and implications of these grant conditions, will proceed in California.
