Videos Capture Meteor Explosion Off Massachusetts Coast
On May 30, a meteor exploded off the coast of Massachusetts, and video and audio clips shared online captured the fireball and massive boom it caused. NASA confirmed through satellite images that the meteor broke apart at an altitude of about 40 miles over northeastern Massachusetts at 2:06 p.m. ET. The agency stated that the meteor released energy equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT explosives, causing a loud noise in the area. Pieces of the meteor landed in Cape Cod Bay, and people as far south as Rhode Island and Cape Cod reported feeling it on the ground, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The American Meteor Society received more than 80 witness reports from people who saw the fireball across states including Maryland, New York, Vermont, and even up into Canada. Homeowners across Massachusetts and Rhode Island unexpectedly caught the sound of the boom through surveillance cameras.
