Environmental Working Group Report Highlights Nitrate Contamination in U.S. Tap Water
A report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals that over 62 million Americans may be exposed to potentially harmful levels of nitrates in their tap water. Nitrates, compounds of nitrogen and oxygen, become a health risk when they leach into groundwater from nitrogen-rich fertilizers used in agriculture. These contaminants have been linked to various health issues, including thyroid disease and certain cancers. The EWG's report, which uses data from nearly 50,000 public water systems, highlights that more than 6,000 community water systems tested at or above 3 milligrams per liter of nitrates, a level associated with health risks. The report also notes that private well water, which is not regulated by the EPA, is not covered in the study.
