Dermatologists Highlight Key Warning Signs of Skin Cancer Beyond Moles
Recent discussions among dermatologists have emphasized the importance of recognizing various forms of skin cancer, which do not always present as changing moles. According to Dr. Derrick Phillips, a consultant dermatologist and spokesperson for The British Skin Foundation, the three most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Each type has distinct characteristics and warning signs. Basal cell carcinoma, the most common form, is linked to sun exposure and often appears as a pearly pink bump on sun-exposed areas. Squamous cell carcinoma, which can spread to other body parts, may present as scaly or crusted growths. Melanoma, the most serious form, can develop from existing moles or new lesions and is identified using the ABCDE checklist: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter over 6mm, and Evolving characteristics.
