Research Highlights Impact of High-Fat Diet on Lung Cancer Cachexia in Mice
Researchers have discovered that a high-fat diet in mice can amplify nerve signals between certain lung cancers and the brain, leading to reduced appetite and weight loss. This study, conducted by a team led by Dr. Thales Papagiannakopoulos at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, focused on cachexia, a wasting syndrome common in cancer patients characterized by loss of appetite and muscle and fat wasting. The research utilized mouse models with different genetic subtypes of lung cancer, particularly focusing on those with a mutation in the Lkb1 gene. These mice exhibited cachexia symptoms and did not gain weight on a high-fat diet, which worsened their condition. The study found that the high-fat diet increased activity in brain areas that reduce appetite and raised levels of prostaglandin E2, a molecule involved in lung inflammation. The findings suggest that lung cancer tumors may influence eating behavior by affecting local nerve signals.
