Federal Settlement Erases Student Loans for Thousands, Including Virginia Woman
Charmaine Pitt, a 41-year-old Virginia resident, recently discovered her student loan balance had been reduced to zero, a relief shared by thousands of borrowers across the United States. This development is part of a $6 billion class-action settlement known as Sweet v. McMahon, which addresses claims from borrowers defrauded by their educational institutions. Pitt, who had been navigating the legal process for four years, was among those whose loans were automatically discharged after the Department of Education missed a critical deadline to process Borrower Defense to Repayment applications. This rule allows borrowers to seek loan forgiveness if they were misled by their colleges. The settlement, approved in 2022, required the Department to act by January 28, 2026, failing which automatic relief was granted.
