University of Utah Addresses Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research
The University of Utah's U Research, through its Office of the Research Integrity Officer (ORIO), is providing resources and guidelines for the responsible use of generative AI in academic research. The initiative aims to help researchers leverage AI tools for tasks such as literature review, idea organization, material summarization, and writing improvement, while safeguarding the integrity, accuracy, and originality of their work. Zach Mitchell, the U's Research Integrity Officer, emphasizes that every researcher is accountable for what they produce through AI and must understand applicable AI-use standards. The ORIO is addressing common issues observed by research administrators, including AI-generated content that may appear polished but contains inaccuracies, unsupported claims, hallucinated citations, or even invented data. The university stresses that AI tools do not absolve researchers of their responsibility for the accuracy and verifiability of their statements, citations, or results.
