UCLA Study Reveals Potential for Rapid Reversal of Autism Traits in Mice
A recent study conducted by UCLA Health has demonstrated that a single dose of the drug rapamycin can rapidly reverse autism-like traits in adult mice. The research, published in Nature Communications, focused on mice whose mothers experienced mild inflammation during pregnancy, leading to autism-like symptoms in the offspring. The study found that within two hours of administering rapamycin, there was a significant improvement in abnormal neuronal firing, seizure susceptibility, and functional network connectivity. This rapid response suggests that the adult brain retains a degree of functional plasticity, allowing for temporary normalization of brain activity without altering structural differences. However, rapamycin is not considered suitable for human use due to its temporary effects and potential toxicity.
