Peruvian Earthquake Causes Severe Damage to Historic 16th-Century Church
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Junín region of Peru on July 18, causing significant damage to the Iglesia Apóstol Santiago, a 16th-century church located in the town of Chongos Bajo. The earthquake led to the collapse of the church's roof and part of its façade, as well as the destruction of the carved stone cross known as Our Lord of the Cani Cruz in the adjacent plaza. The church, a cultural heritage site, holds religious and economic significance for the local community. Efforts are underway to raise funds for restoration, with the Archdiocese of Huancayo launching a campaign to support the rebuilding process. The church's belltower, made of brick and cement, is also at risk of collapse. The restoration is estimated to cost over $400,000, and the process could take up to two years.
