President Trump Conditions Gateway Funding on Renaming Penn Station, Halting Construction
President Trump has proposed resuming federal funding for the Gateway project, a critical infrastructure initiative involving the construction of a new rail tunnel between New York and New Jersey, on the condition that New York's Penn Station and Washington's Dulles International Airport be renamed after him. This proposal was reportedly dismissed by Sen. Chuck Schumer, who stated that he lacked the authority to fulfill such a request. The funding, initially secured under the Biden administration, was frozen during a government shutdown in October. As a result, construction on the project is set to halt, with the Gateway Development Commission (GDC) announcing that funding for the Hudson Tunnel Project will run out by February 6. The project, which began in November 2023, is crucial for maintaining the aging tunnels that suffered damage during Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
