Study Reveals High LDL Cholesterol Levels in U.S. Adults as Major Health Concern
A recent study conducted by Mass General Brigham highlights a significant health issue in the United States, where nearly one-third of adults without heart disease and almost 80% of those with a history of cardiovascular events have LDL cholesterol levels above the targets set by the 2026 American cholesterol guidelines. The study, published in JAMA, reveals that a large portion of these individuals are not receiving cholesterol-lowering medications, which could prevent heart attacks and strokes. The guidelines, updated by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, emphasize lower LDL levels for higher-risk patients. The research analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, covering approximately 2,300 adults, and found substantial gaps between recommended and actual LDL levels.
