Tornado Activity Shifts Eastward, Breaking Records in Midwest States
Tornado activity in the United States is shifting eastward from the traditional Tornado Alley in the Great Plains to areas in the Midwest and Southeast, including states like Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, and Tennessee. This shift has been observed over the past 40 years, according to Victor Gensini, a professor at Northern Illinois University. Illinois has experienced a dramatic increase in tornadoes, recording 178 so far in 2026, which is more than three times its annual average of 54. Missouri has also seen a surge, with 81 tornadoes reported this year, compared to its average of 52. This trend is attributed to the emergence of a new tornado hotspot, Dixie Alley, which spans parts of the Southeast.
