Healthy Eating Patterns Linked to Slower Biological Aging Through DNA Modifications
A study by DZNE, published in Nature Communications, has found that various healthy dietary patterns are associated with slower biological aging. Researchers examined ten different dietary patterns, including Mediterranean, Nordic, plant-based, and DASH diets, and observed that all were linked to reduced biological aging. This association was assessed by analyzing chemical changes in DNA, specifically DNA methylation, which systematically changes over a person's lifetime and serves as a molecular indicator of aging. The study involved blood samples and dietary information from approximately 7,500 individuals, with initial findings from 6,470 participants in DZNE’s Rhineland Study and independent confirmation from 1,034 participants in the EPIC-Potsdam Study. The researchers noted that while there isn't a single 'best' diet, the commonality among these healthy eating patterns is their influence on biological pathways related to cell structure, signaling, and metabolism, which are central to aging and chroni...
