Judit Polgar Declines Offer to Become Hungary's President Amid Political Transition
Judit Polgar, a renowned Jewish chess champion, has declined an offer to become the President of Hungary. The offer was extended by Hungary's new Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, following the resignation of the previous president, Tamas Sulyok. Sulyok, who was perceived as a puppet of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, was forced to resign after a constitutional amendment. Polgar, who is celebrated as one of the greatest female chess players, expressed her gratitude for the offer but stated on Facebook that she lacked the strength to take on the responsibility of uniting a divided nation. Polgar's decision comes amid significant political changes in Hungary, as Magyar seeks to dismantle the power structures established by Orban, which critics argue have eroded democracy in the country.
