Mind Chief Criticizes Mental Health Groups for Downplaying Violence Risk
Dr. Sarah Hughes, chief executive of the mental health charity Mind, has stated that mental health organizations have "failed to acknowledge" the risk of violence posed by a minority of individuals with severe mental illnesses. Her comments come as the inquiry into the Nottingham attacks, where Valdo Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, fatally stabbed three people, is nearing its conclusion. Hughes, who has nearly four decades of experience in the mental health sector, believes that charities have avoided discussing this issue due to fears of increasing stigma and discrimination against people with mental health conditions. She emphasized that while the majority of individuals with mental illnesses do not commit violent crimes, some do, and the consequences can be severe.
